Germany Small Towns: Discovering Lahr, Baden-Württemberg

3(!) newly built parks, annual Chrysanthema Festival, natural lake-pool. Germany small towns: Lahr, 1 hour by car from Strasbourg

In this post I’d like to share with you one of the Germany small towns we really like.

Located at the edge of Black Forest, Lahr (50 000 residents) attract more than 300 000 visitors over 2 week in autumn.

Try to guess for what attraction!

9 fun places to visit with kids in Lahr

1. City Park: rose garden, maze, playground, pond, animals, etc

City Park has an entry fee of around €4 per adult and €1.50 per child.

One of the biggest attraction for our children were scooters and tricycles (you can borrow them at the entrance for a 1 or 2 euro):

City Park Lahr is a paid attraction, around 4 euro per adult and 1.5 euro per kid

Maze, pictured below, was great for hide and seek and chasing each other:

There are also farm animals and exotic animals, parrots, little monkeys, desert animals:

This park is quite unique, and for a reason.

Founded by Christian Jamm, a highly successful businessman, this former estate was created for a woman he once met in Paris – Amélie de Cantillon.

He loved her for life and proposed many times, but she always refused. Christian Jamm died alone and donated all his wealth to the city.

2. Mineral water Quelle Dammenmühle

We always look for mineral water springs, and Baden-Württemberg has plenty of them.

Our grandma loves mineral water, so we gave this one a try – and it seemed quite nice.

Accross the spring there is a Hotel Dammenmühle, with a interesting park nearby, and a lake.

3. Seepark (“Lakeside park”)

On the former agriculture land during “Landscape Garden Show 2018” were created 2 new parks connected to each other.

Seepark has lakeside promenade, cafe with terrasse, floating bridge, meadows, and water plant filtering system, so no chlorine in the lake.

First ice cream we got at the cafe, and the next one at the Italian ice cream truck “Don Peppino”, both were excellent.

4. Bürger Park

Bürger Park or “The Citizens’ Park” connected to the Seepark by footbridge. It is a large park, with plenty of green space, sport fields, and playgrounds:

5. Germany small towns: another new park in Lahr- Kleinfeld park

Completed in summer 2019, it has a large playground, pond, a nice coffee at the “Schmetterling Cafe” nearby, and lots of green space:

We haven’t been to this place yet, but really want to go

6. Sulz Natural Pool

We visited similar place before with “chemically free, plants-purified water for swimming”, it’s always an interesting experience:

Germany small town: outdoor pools, sport fields even at the small villages

7. Naturlehrpfad Litschental

This trail isn’t directly in Lahr, but we visited it on the same trip.

  • Address: Omersbach 5, 77960 Seelbach

Out and back walking trail, secluded, with lots of nature:

8. Lahr City Museum

Here you can discover the Chrysanthema Festival floral traditions and dive into the city’s past with artifacts including items from the Roman settlement period.

Family-friendly, modern (inside) place:

9. Chrysanthema Festival

The Chrysanthema Festival kicks off around last weeks of October.

For two weeks, the Old town transforms into a vibrant place, decorated with thousands of chrysanthemums:
