A Fun Family Hike in Black Forest for Kids

Exploring a family-friendly trail in Baden-Württemberg’s Black Forest, just 50 minutes from Strasbourg – a short, enjoyable hike for families

If you’re looking for a family day out in the Black Forest, this trail is one we really enjoyed with our kids (ages 8 and 11). It’s not too long and has plenty of little surprises along the way.

Trail details: 2.5 km loop, with about 254 meters of elevation gain.

Highlights: old mill, alpaca farm, small playground, and creek.

Parking coordinates: J45Q+99 Sasbachwalden (use in Google Maps)

On the Wilder Sasbach Wanderweg kids’ trail

We set off near the alpaca farm and walked a few minutes to the old mill, which really impressed our 8- and 11-year-olds.

The walk is peaceful but engaging – kids and adults alike enjoyed climbing over fallen logs along the creek. A small playground in the middle of the forest was a fun surprise, and the surroundings are beautiful, with lush trees, little ponds, and boulders covered in moss.

Extend your day with a visit to nearby Sasbachwalden – a picturesque town we love for its parks, playgrounds, or even another hike (you can try Gaishöll Waterfalls). There’s plenty to enjoy for the whole family!

Have you already discovered any of these hikes or things to do? Tell me which one your kids liked best – I love hearing about other families’ adventures.

Can’t resist sharing another cool place to visit in the Black Forest: the charming town of Lahr, famous for its annual Fall Chrysanthema Festival.

All the best,
